Curatorial note for 'In Other Rooms'

In Other Rooms

‘In Other Rooms’ is a group show featuring work by four artists: Martand Khosla, Suchender P, Masooma Syed and Avinash Veeraraghavan. As an allusion to the narrative structure of In Other Rooms, Other Wonders, a book of independent short stories by Daniyal Mueenuddin - the underlying strains of connectivity between object, subject and space is deliberately left open to viewers, so they may bring to the show their subjective readings and associations. Structured around the floor plan of GALLERYSKE Bangalore, an erstwhile Colonial cottage, each artist’s work occupies one of four rooms. Exploring specific and considered ideas in their dedicated spaces, through the viewer, works begin to collectively unfold and engage with one another.

As an architect and artist, Martand Khosla articulates the condition of rapid urbanisation in new India, migration, and displacement. Suchender P’s paintings allude to the skewed relationship between humanity and wildlife and the impact of economically motivated policies on our environment. Masooma Syed’s work emerges intuitively from the constructs of our belief systems, of emotions such as love, and its expressions in the form youthful declarations, or matured resilience. Avinash Veeraraghavan’s work challenges perception through fragmented and layered images, eliciting our endeavour to piece information together in the wake of entropy.
