As part of London Festival of Architecture and E17 Art Trail, Walthamstow based artist Vasu Sellamuthu activates the courtyard space of Wood Street Studios by inviting Londoners of all age groups to paint stones and stack dream homes of their own, intrigued to see the city it might produce. Stone balancing is a universal act in which rocks are balanced on top of one another without the use of adhesives or supports. On the grounds of Hindu temples in India, rocks are similarly stacked as a wish granting ritual, as it is believed the person who does this will construct a house. Through this participatory installation, Sellamuthu reflects on the ideal of home ownership as integral to the collective aspirations of our society and the current climate of building to meet a housing shortage in London.

The Wood Street Studios team is looking forward to welcoming you to our studio!

  • Suitable for ages 5+. We’d ask that for each child, a parent or responsible adult stays and joins in with the activity.

  • Drop-in anytime during event times to select your stones, paint them and stack your piece in the Wood Street Studios courtyard. This activity will last around 30-45 minutes.

  • Our studios will simultaneously be open to visitors as part of E17 Art Trail 2019.

  • Our studio is located on the bend of Barrett Road, E17 3NB. The building is the Manual Instruction Centre, a small building that used to be part of the Woodside Primary’s Bridge Site. The main entrance gate is on the west side of the courtyard. We’re a short walk from Wood Street Station or the no. W16 and 230 bus routes.
